New Beginnings Leadership
Annette Goodman
My Philosophy related to teaching generally, is based on and delivered under the theory of a Person Centered environment. The essence of this experience involves the creation of an environment and a relationship in which a student can feel safe to explore aspects of them self, their life, their relationships and their community. The approaches that I employ in a classroom setting are predominantly student centered and trans-personal; with modalities that may include one or more of the following: collaboration, group work, discussion, research, workshops, speakers, music, and you-tube commercials which allow the incorporation of real life encounters and experiences.
This philosophy can be applied to both face-to face and online educational settings. The emphasis is on creating the learning environment or platform that will demonstrate instructor guided participation, interaction, critical thinking, and knowledge as a part of the person centered environment. This philosophy/theory called Person Centered originated with Carl Rogers one of the will known psycho-therapist. Rogers views people as basically good or healthy -- or at very least, not bad or ill. The entire theory is built on a single “force of life” he calls the actualizing tendency. It can be defined as the built-in motivation present in every life-form to develop its potentials to the fullest extent possible. This is what I seek and desire for each one of my students.
In the application of this philosophy in the classroom setting; the assignments are given to make actual or real demonstrations that students can relate to. I have delivered instruction with courses in Critical Thinking, Psychology, and Career Management which are courses that are positive self-regard, that is, self-esteem, self-worth, and positive self-image for each student. I achieve this positive self-regard by making classroom and online experiences with each student by probing them to think and synthesize why you attend college, why you major in what you major in, and the importance of the decision students have made to attend college. This allows Professional Development to take place for each student. As a Career Development/Critical Thinking Specialist, I will continue to pursue a career that allows me to motivate and guide adult learners with the goal of positive academic achievement and the ability to gain competitive employment.
